Santa Fe Trails is a 189-unit project in Carlsbad California. The homes in this newer area of Carlsbad are affordable and highly desirable, and are generally 2,100-3,123 sq. ft., with 4-5 bdrms., and 2-3 baths. The home owner association fees are around $100. The neighborhood development was named after the Santa Fe Trail, which came to California through Yuma, on to San Diego County and north to the rest of California. See the map below.
The Santa Fe Trail was a significant historical and economical important commercial route from 1821 to 1880, extended from the westernmost settlements of the United States in Missouri across the plains Indian country to the New Mexican capital of Santa Fe and on to California and in the immigrant trails to the Far West.

Caravans of pack animals were making yearly trips to California, down the river routes, across the desert and Santa Fe trails, from where agents would fan out over the territory, from San Diego to points north. They would be trading the woolen fabrics of New Mexico for the silk and other goods brought in by sea from Old Santa Fe Trail" to Santa Fe and "from Santa Fe west on the most historic and scenic route to the Pacific Coast."
The housing project was started in the 1990s and has proved to be an affordable and popular area in which to live.
